Ask for a review without making it awkward

A simple review-request routine for electricians, with a message you can use and checks that keep requests genuine.

Choose a clear finishing point

Use the same point in the job routine each time: the agreed work is complete and the customer has the information they need. Check that the contact belongs to the customer for that job.

A review request should not interrupt an unresolved complaint or replace dealing with a problem. Record the issue, get it to the person responsible and arrange the next action.

Ask for an honest account

Keep the message short. Mention the job and give the customer one working review link. Ask for their experience rather than a particular star rating.

Hi [name], thanks for having us in for [job]. If you have a moment, you can leave an honest review of your experience here: [review link]. Thanks, [business name].

Use the same rules for everybody

Do not filter customers by who you think will leave five stars. Do not offer money, discounts or gifts for a review. Avoid asking people to change or remove criticism in exchange for something.

Google’s review policy prohibits incentives and selectively asking for positive reviews. Its rules also cover pressure to review while on the premises. Build an ordinary, consistent request into the job handover instead.

Prevent repeat requests

Before sending, check whether a request has already gone out for the job and whether the customer has replied. Stop reminders when they decline or ask you to stop.

If you use a follow-up, choose a sensible limit and record it. A job status changing twice should not send the same customer two requests. Test duplicates and replies before putting the routine into use.

Reply without publishing private job details

Thank the customer for taking the time. If there is criticism, acknowledge the concern and move the discussion to a private channel. Do not publish their address, payment history or other personal details to defend the business.

For your next completed job, check your link, send the short message and record the date. The free Admin Toolkit has a handover checklist you can use to put this step into the normal job routine.
